The wooden doll

A week ago I did follow a workshop at the Apeldoorn Dollhouse Show given by David Pennant from Teeny Weeny Teddies. His class was well prepared and a great tutor he turned out to be. First we've started on carving/sanding the wooden pieces. A lot of extra steps followed and after that we've had plenty of time to practice on painting faces. First on a flat surface and after that on a dummy before we started finally painting on our tiny dolls. She's fully poseable, well her arms and legs at least. Putting on her sleeves was a reall challenge since my own fingers got in the way constantly.

But here she is on the sofa her residence for the time being.

And here's a close up of her, it wasn't easy to get a clear picture of her.

On Saturday, at the show, I recieved this wonderfull portrait from a friend of mine!
I was totally surprised by this generous gift so again a BIG thank you!! He will get a nice place in one of the rooms but I haven't decided which one yet. So he might show up in several pictures through the house.

And here's one of the plates that I've painted, it's still not finished it needs some more detailwork like fish scales after that it can again be fired.

At the show I didn't have much time for shopping since I was helping a friend at his table.
But fortunately I can look forward to a trip to Kensington Dollhouse Festival next month.

    1. Hi Gee, I know there's something about blue...I always pick blue somehow(clothes) but you can't have enough porcelain with delicate blue painting on it.

    1. Hi Elga,
Thank you, since you're a true artist yourself with wood!! I'm very pleased with this doll and who knows I will try to make some more in the future. Ofcourse I will show the end result of the plate in the future, that's the fun part of Blogger.

  9. Hi Jeffrey.
I like everything you've made. The doll is very beautiful.
Jeffrey, can you tell me what kind of wallpaper did you use in the living room? I never seen anything like this in online stores.

    1. Hi Nina,
Thank you so much for you Big compliment, truelly! About the wallpaper in the diningroom it's not a wallpaper but a nicely woven silk in a small pattern that I really liked when I saw it. So I did buy a piece of it on which I based the color theme for the livingroom. I bought it at the store in Amsterdam, if you want some more info just send me an email ok?

  10. Ooh Wow! I'm very impressed!!! The dolls face looks lovely from what i can see. She's so tiny, she's a real accomplishment. What a wonderful class to take, and bring home such a cute beauty.

But i'm even more impressed with your porcelain painting. Striking Carp (?) and I simply lóve it's face and mouth! So delicately done, I know how hard it is to keep the lines fresh and crisp, but even the rim is flawless. Very very nice Jeffery!

You did this through Cocky's? You say it's one of a few… You've got more to show? Please share them if you can, your porcelain paintings are always striking. I remember the bowl with the goldfish you made in the past. That was equally impressive.

And i'm happy you got such a delicate gift! Miniature friends are great friends :)

    1. Hi Debora,
Thank you and yes she's very tiny putting on her sleeves was nerve racking.

Indeed a Carp, well there are 'trics' to get those tiny crispy lines! I even managed to "write" in a way that others can read what was written!
Yes another workshop at Cocky's she's wonderfull and enjoys how we all experiment/have our own ideas. Yes there will be more to show like the tiles for the kitchen but you have to be patience, sorry.

Yes miniature friends are one of the best you can have!

    1. Hi Eli,
Here we use cm instead of inches but if I have to guess she's just under 2 inches when standing.
And thank you for your kind words.

    1. Hi Mercedes,
Thank you! It works if you first practice on a piece of paper to create a face as tiny as possible and after a few attempts paint it on the doll.

  16. The fish plate looks great already, despite not being finished. I love the doll, she looks antique! I remember seeing David Pennants stall at Miniatura. Very memorable. He had a row of teddies on an old battered sofa, and as far as I can remember they had jagged teeth, as they sometimes did.

Yes David's work is just wonderfull I love that sofa he uses at the show filled with wooden dolls.
The plate was fun to do and needs just a tiny bit more detail and I'm more than happy with this tiny doll.
