David Hurley workshop

September last year we had our 3th workshop, wood carving with David Hurley.
This time we would make a Tudor wall cabinet during the 3 days.

This is how we started, checking all the parts before we draw the patterns on the wood parts.

Here I'm working on the piece with the arches, which turned out to be the most time consuming part to be made. And made us think we will never finish this project in time.
Somehow that's what we think during every workshop at some point!

It's starting to look like a cabinet, David carved the numbers and my initials since these pieces where so tiny and there where no extra parts!

My finished piece, still waiting for it's place in one of my projects, yes in one of the Rik Pierce houses. But when we finished our cabinet during the workshop there was plenty of time to start on an extra carving piece.

I wanted to take my time with this piece to do the carving as good as possible.
Since we're still learning, I was pleased that I got the background so smouth this time.

When I started on this piece I had the idea to not just stain it but also paint the carving and add some goldleaf details on it. I do like the colors on it and to make it complete the panel needed a frame to give it a finished look.

It took a while to make this piece, I hope you like it as much as I do!

  1. Wow, both are great! I suppose the Tudor version of these must have been just are brightly coloured when they were new.
I only see a scalpel in the photos, but you must have used other tools to get such sharp lines/shapes???

    1. Hi Idske, Yes some of those Tudor versions used to be brightly painted. Glad to see you like the bold colors. No we used other tools als well they don't show in these pics but you see them in older posts here about carving. They are special made tiny chisels by David himself.

  4. I'm always amazed at what people achieve in these classes in such a relatively short time. I would be terrified of making a mistake. The cabinet and panel have beautiful carving. Well done =0)

    1. Hi Pepper, it's a clever worked out process, you work in small steps to add the details and don't be afraid to make mistakes! Even in the realsize furniture/carvings there are sometimes small mistakes that's what gives it's it charm I think. Glad to see you like them as well.

  6. I love both of your carved pieces. Fabulous work. I would love to learn carving. I really love your painted piece. It reminds me of a William Morris design or an Elizabethan embroidery design - great colours.

    1. Hi,
Thank you, they still hold some tiny misstakes but you learn how to deal with them so they don't bother anymore. I know Ann High also gives some wonderfull carving workshops in Europe and the States, so who knows..!
Funny now that you've mention it it does look like a William Morris pattern in a way.

  12. Great you got to attend Davids workshop. Unfortunately I was out of the country cos his classes are excellent, and you've created two wonderful pieces, both the cabinet ánd the plaque.

And what a great idea to paint the flowers. It's not something I would have thought of doing, but it really paid of! It's such a sweet & pretty decoration piece now.

    Congratulations!

    1. Hi Debora,
Yes it's great to follow one of his workshops! A pitty you where out of the country at that time.
A big thank you for the compliments on the carvings since I know the standard of your work! ;-).

When I saw the example of the flower carving I clearly had an image of colors that I wanted to use on it. At first a bit scared after all the carving to just paint it but after a bit of color I knew it was the right choice for this piece.
Curious on what kind of project you're working at the moment.
